As part of ILUCIDARE capacity building, World Monuments Fund (WMF) joins forces with the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) for a workshop for the Arab States on Geophysics Analysis in Conservation, which takes place in Bahrain from 10 to 14 October 2021.
The proposed capacity building aims to promote a thorough and multidisciplinary approach to restoration works, introducing geophysical studies as a valid tool for analysis. The workshop targets participants with diverse professional backgrounds, such as site managers, surveyors, and conservation professionals. The workshop therefore relates to ILUCIDARE´s interest in innovation and international relations. It counts on the full support of the EU delegation in the region.
Expected outcomes of the workshop are:
- An update of the geomatics methods used to document historical places will be provided, including GNSS, surveying, 3D Terrestrial laser scanning, photogrammetry, multispectral and Hyperspectral remote sensing.
- The relevance and use of new non-invasive technologies such as geophysical survey are understood by the participants.
- Participants will be able to understand and use the introduced survey methods at their own site/work.
- Innovation and the use of various applications in heritage conservation are integrated in the understanding of heritage-led sustainable development.
The participants will be familiarized with the main geophysical techniques applied to the study of cultural built heritage, such as:
- Ground penetrating radar,
- Electrical methods (electric resistivity tomography and self-potential),
- Magnetic prospection,
- Microgravimetry,
- Geomatics techniques for accurate georeferencing of data.
The workshop will be held in Bahrain and will consist of lecture format presentations, on-site work and multidisciplinary teamwork.

- Prof. Francisco Garcia, Professor of the Department of Cartographic Engineering, Geodesy and Photogrammetry, Universitat Politècnica de València.
- Director of the Higher Technical School of Geodetic, Cartographic and Topographic Engineering Universitat Politècnica de València.
- Prof. Jose Delgado Rodrigues, Geologist, Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (ret.).
- Dr. Pierre Lombard, Head of French Archaeological Mission in Bahrain, French National Centre for Scientific Research and Advisor for Archaeology, Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities.
- Dr. Vicente Bayarri, Senior Geomatics Engineer, a specialist in geophysics applications, GIM Geomatics.
- Pablo Longoria, Architect, Specialist in Heritage Conservation and Director of World Monuments Fund Spain and member of ILUCIDARE.
